Every family should have a plan of action in case of an emergency. But what about an emergency plan for your pets? Creating an emergency plan for your furry friends is simple and can prove to be a lifesaving tool. Here are a few tips to get you started:

1.       Verification. Make sure your pet is wearing a proper I.D. tag that is visible, with up-to-date information including name, address, and phone number. If possible, attach the address and phone number of your evacuation site. Also, keep a current photo of your furry friend for identification purposes. Microchipping your pet is a great option to consider because it gives your pet the best chance of returning home if lost during a natural disaster.

2.       Make a Pet Emergency Kit. Here’s a list of suggested items:

  • Pet food
  • Water
  • Medications
  • Vet records
  • Cat litter/pan
  • Manual can opener
  • Food dishes
  • First aid kit

3.       Know Where to Go. Research and create a list of places that accept pets in case of an emergency. Most shelters will need you to provide medical records to make sure that all vaccinations are current. If you can’t find a shelter, ask a neighbor or a nearby family member if they are able to help board your pet.

4.       Always Stay Together. Remember, having a preparedness plan for your animals can help keep them alive and safe.
